Community Project

Purpose:  Create a relationship with the Department of National Resources (DNR) that is supportive, responsive and empowering to Aspiro, that they might meet their agency goals.  We hope to strengthen our social resources through helping them by an environment beautification project.

Description of Project:  At Rock Cliff Nature Center, in Jordanelle Reservoir we will remove teasel and houndstongue.  This will require cutting, digging up and disposing of these noxious weeds.

Funding:

·        Equipment provided by DNR

o   Clippers

o   Trash bags

o   Gloves

o   Disposal site

o   Shovels

·        Equipment provided by Aspiro

o   The volunteers and their transportation

Timeline:

·        7/2/09 – Get Aspiro’s approval for beautification community service project

·        7/16/09 - Contact DNR about doing a project

·        7/18/09 - Meet DNR to see where the needs are

·        7/20/09 - Pick up shovels from Base Camp

·        7/20/09 - Arrival of volunteers to Rock Cliff – they will stay overnight there

·        7/20/09 – Fax in volunteer agreement sheet to DNR

·        7/21/09 - Do beautification project – start 10 am

·        7/22/09 - Return shovel to Base Camp

·        7/30/09 - Send thank you card for allowing us to be of service and to strengthen Aspiro’s relationship and image with DNR.

o   12 students and 5 guides

Hours:

·        Hours to complete project: 2 ½

·        Total service project organization to completion: 6 hours

Benefits:

  • Kairos participants were able to be involved in a project where they could see the result of their work and they took great pride in it.
  • The Department of Natural Resource was able to have noxious weed removed.
  • Aspiro was able to strengthen its relationship and improve its reputation with DNR. 

Strengths:

  •  The students were excited to work and do something to help others.
  • All were involved with a specific task.
  • The service project ran in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Accomplished the intended purpose.

Weaknesses:

  • Miscommunication between the guides and those setting up the project.
